Uganda Has Talent- Former Orphan Demonstrates Her Skills

Lynette is a young girl who was dropped off by a local motorcycle taxi and abandoned on our door steps in Uganda along with her sister Maxie in September of 2007. They were both terrified. We never did find out who their parents or guardians were. We took them in and began the process of loving them back to life.

Over the past couple of years we have seen a dramatic change in their lives. Lynette has gone from all frowns to all smiles. She is truly a “ham!” In this video, she is showing off her abilities to Hula Hoop with an old tire. She was the best doing it of all the kids at our children’s home. This is just one fun example of how tears can be turned to joy through the power of love. You can make a difference in a kid like Lynette through a child sponsorship. Dear Friends,

We are excited to announce the information for our next trip to Uganda for January 2010. For those of you who have traveled with us before, I don’t need to tell you the impact that this trip will have on your life. For those who will be joining us for the first time, get ready to experience some incredible children and see firsthand the amazing things God is doing through Show Mercy International in Uganda. You won’t regret going. It is truly an amazing experience that will affect you for years to come.

Dates:

Leaving for Uganda on January 11th and Returning from Uganda on January 25th (Arrive in Uganda on 1-12, leave Uganda on 1-24)

Deadline to Apply:

The absolute deadline to apply is November 1, 2009. However, please read the rest of this post. We highly suggest applying as soon as you are able. The interest in this trip should be substantial. You cannot fundraise through Show Mercy until your application and $500 fee is received.

Costs and Airfare:

The cost of the trip will be $1200 per person. (your $500 deposit is deducted from this total.) The final balance of   $700 is due no later than November 1st) Your payment will include the following:

  1. Hotel Accommodations in Uganda for 12 nights (Hotel Equatoria in Kampala)
  2. Ground Transportation while in Uganda
  3. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner in Uganda
  4. Bottled drinking water while in Uganda
  5. An overnight trip to Jinja where we will visit the source of the Nile River, Bujagali Falls and an African craft market in Jinja town. All park entrance fees and hotel costs are included for this trip.
  6. Costs for basic village projects or outreaches.
  7. Administrative Fees

A visa is not included in the cost and can be purchased easily at the Entebbe, Uganda airport when we arrive for $50. The only other costs that you will have other than your airfare would be for souvenirs and possibly a couple of lunches when we are away from the hotel or Hope Childrens Home. Most team members spend less than $100 on these extras.

The costs of traveling with Show Mercy to Uganda to volunteer is tax deductible since we are a 501c3 nonprofit organization. We will issue receipts for all payments made towards your trip. If you have any questions, please see your tax professional or accountant or for details.

Please note that we can accept credit cards for payment for this trip, however, a 2.5% fee will be added to the total amount charged to cover the fees that will be charged to Show Mercy. We appreciate your understanding in this.

Airfare:

Team members will be responsible for obtaining their own airline tickets to Uganda. This will enable you to use frequent flyer miles if you have them and often search and find rates much lower than the rates often provided by group tickets.  Team members must arrive on January 12th in Uganda. We encourage you to call travel agents specializing in travel to Africa or missionary travel. If they ask, our Tax Exemption ID is 20-1306704. This arrangement will also enable those of you who live in or near a hub city to eliminate the need for an additional domestic flight. We will be glad to give you suggestions on where to look for tickets.

The travel agent we typically us is Consolidator Webfares. You can reach them at 888-476-8705. You can ask for Cammy or Klaus. Tell them that you are traveling with Show Mercy International. They are familiar with us and have helped us obtain very good rates and flights in the past. You will fly into Entebbe (EBB). I am sure there are other great travel agencies out there. Check around. Prices will often change from day to day. Some people have found tickets at a lower cost than we have. Be persistent and look often.

If you would like for us to help you purchase your airline tickets, we would be happy to do so. We will purchase them at the time that the full payment for the tickets is received. Please note that ticket prices typically increase dramatically the longer you wait to purchase them. Space will also fill up due to a team of our size traveling the same days. The sooner you are able to purchase your tickets, the better your rate for airfare will often be. Ticket prices will often depend upon the flight path you take, the amount of layovers, etc.

What will we do on this trip?

Spend time at Hope Children’s Home with the kids. There will be scheduled crafts, games and projects to work on with the kids. We will also need your assistance in interviewing kids and possibly visiting the village homes of some of our school kids that don’t live at Hope Children’s Home. Of course a lot of the time we will be just loving them and spending quality time with them.

  1. Visit a hospital and prison where we can encourage and pray for the patients and inmates.
  2. Village Outreaches yet to be determined
  3. Opportunity to share in a local village church if you desire to do so.
  4. Possibly show a film in an outlying village using our new generator, projector and sound system.
  5. “Field of Dreams” visit- Construction of our project should have begun on our 25 acres in Kaliti Village. We will most likely do another outreach to that community as well.
  6. Outing with the kids- We will take the children from Hope on some sort of field trip. Trips in the past have included a visit to an amusement park and the Entebbe Zoo.
  7. Overnight trip to Jinja where we will spend the night on the Nile river, take a boat ride to the source of the Nile, visit some beautiful waterfalls and shop in an African craft market.
  8. Possible opportunity to encourage the Ugandans on a radio station that we sponsor to over 2 million listeners.
  9. Possible other activities based upon the desires and abilities of the team members who go with us including medical clinics, sports competitions, etc.

Preparations: What should you do now to begin preparing?

Get your passport if you don’t have one. If you do, make sure it won’t expire while you are in Uganda. http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

Get a yellow fever vaccination which is required by Uganda to obtain a visa. This can often take time to schedule with your Health Department so plan accordingly.

(We are not staying in a jungle, at least not yet.)Team members are also not allowed to venture off on projects unrelated to the mission of Show Mercy or the team. We are going as a Show Mercy team and will stick together in unity from the beginning until the end of the trip. Thanks in advance for your understanding in this.

We encourage you to contact others that might want to be a part of Show Mercy by sowing into your trip financially. Once you are signed up for the trip, your application is approved and your $500 deposit is received, Show Mercy will create an account or fund for you. People CAN make tax deductible contributions towards the cost of your trip via cash, check or credit card. Show Mercy will deduct a 5% administration fee from your fund balance to cover the costs of handling those contributions that come from others. Please ask your supporters to make a note stating that the donation is to be used for your trip. We also encourage you to attempt to raise additional funds that can be used for outreaches on the ground while we are in Uganda. Any funds that are received on your behalf that are over and above the cost of your trip will not be returned to the donors or distributed to you. They will be added to the General Fund and used for ongoing projects and new projects. This is necessary to comply with IRS regulations concerning tax deductible donations.

We are very excited about this upcoming trip and know that it will be a life changing experience for both yourselves and the incredible people of Uganda that you will meet. We look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.

One of the Things We Can Take for Granted – A Library

bookcaseBelow is a letter from one of our team members, Ben Redd.  He took on the task of collecting books as well as funds to help us start a library at Hope Children’s Home.  Ben, Ben’s dad Justin, Greg, Mike, and many of the Hope boys have been busy working on the bookcases for the books. This is going to be a great way for the students at our home as well as our school to learn responsibility.  It is also going to help them learn! We are so excited to raise up a librarian and then begin to share this treasure with Gganda Village.

I’ll be posting the pictures of the finished product very soon!

My name is Ben Redd and I am 15 years old.  I helped to collect books and money to help start a library at Hope Children’s Home for my Eagle project in Boy Scouts. With the help of lots of other people I have collected over 500 books and over $1000. I got some people together and we covered more than 150 books with a protective material that will protect the books and make them last longer. We will be taking some of the books in boxes on the plane to Uganda. Some of the money that wasn’t used for the shipping will be used to buy books in the native language of the people in that area. Some more of the mobooksney will be used to build shelves to hold the books.  After organizing this project, I learned that people are a lot more generous and more willing to donate than I thought they would be. I also learned that it’s not as hard as it seems to make a difference in the lives of other people. ~ Ben Redd

We still need to purchase more books in the Luganda language.  If you would like to help with this or with school text books, please click here.

Making a difference together,

Difficult Decisions Made at Hope Children’s Home

Have you had to make any difficult decisions today? We all face decisions and choices every day. For most of us those decision include deciding what we will wear, what to have for lunch, what television show to watch or what type of latte we will enjoy. It is wonderful that we have, for the most part, decisions to make that won’t really matter in the long run.

Unfortunately, we have been faced with some very difficult situations and decisions while here in Uganda. Yesterday we fed all of our Alpha Omega students ( 250 kids) a wonderful meal that included a special treat…a soda. We then had to look in the eyes of over 100 kids and tell them that we are praying with them to get a sponsor so they can begin to eat lunch every day with 150 of their friends that are already sponsored. This was one of the hardest things for us to do!  The look on the children’s faces was overwhelming.  We know some of their stories and life situations.  Some of those children left only to go ”home” and work as slaves for their abusive guardians. The look in their eyes as they left for home inspired us to write to you and ask for your help.   WE NEED TO RESCUE THESE KIDS!

Today, we are sharing this with you and giving you an opportunity to make a difference in a life.  You have another choice that might just determine the future of another human being.

There are a few ways for you to take action.  First is to share our mission and vision with your friends who are not aware of the work that YOU are doing.  If you are donating finances/time and/or praying for SMI -You ARE Show Mercy.

Secondly, if each Show Mercy sponsor got just one friend to sponsor ONE child, we would have ALL of our kids eating, receiving an education and rejoicing. Not only that, but each one of the children would know that someone really cares for them. It only costs around $1.15 per day, less than the price of a single cup of coffee.

Lastly, we are raising money to build new children’s cottages on our Field of Dreams (25 acres of land.)  Each cottage only costs approximately $25K.  Each cottage will house 12 children, so that is only $2000 to rescue ONE child!

For those of you who have not yet sponsored a child or financially supported Show Mercy, today is your official invitation to answer the cry of injustice. You can make a lasting impact on the life of child who is praying for you to say “yes.”  All that we ask is that you listen to your heart and respond as you feel you should.  You can even come with us to Uganda as so many others have done and meet your sponsored kid and see first hand the impact that YOU are making.

We had many choices to make yesterday. Our final one was to decide whether we would speak out and be an advocate for the 100+ kids that have no way of communicating with you or to just hope for the best. We chose to be that advocate.  Now the next choice is up to you.

I Found a Piece of My Heart on a Ugandan Dirt Road

EstherYesterday was a wonderful and joyous day for me!  We gathered all the children from Alpha Omega that are sponsored by all of you and gave them all brand new mosquito nets.  Also, thanks to those that donated towards our “New Mattress” campaign.  We were able to buy new mattresses for the Hope children.  The Hope kids then donated the mattresses that were still in good condition to the Alpha kids.

I personally had the privilege of going home with Esther to deliver her donated mattress.  As we started out, Esther had a huge smile on her face. She is 11 years old, but she physically only looks to be 8.  Patricia from Hope carried Esther’s new mattress on her head and Victoria took the mosquito net from Esther and placed it on her head too.  It was a site to see.   All of the children were total smiles as we walked down the dirt road. I am sure the villagers were looking and wondering what we were doing and where we were going.

Esther led us all down the road with her head held high.  I looked down to find what was making a clapping sound with each of our steps and I discovered it was Esther.  She looked like she was playing dress up, because the shoes she was wearing were about 3 sizes too big.  They clapped and clopped with each step.  She didn’t care though.  The fact that she had shoes was probably enough to make her satisfied.   As I pondered those shoes, I began to imagine Esther actually fitting into those shoes one day.  I could see her in my imagination all grown up!  I could hear her sharing her personal story of how God stepped into her world one day and gave her a net as well as a new bed.  I could see her telling others that there are people that don’t even know her that actually spend their hard earned money to care for her.  I could see Esther paying it forward to small children that don’t have anyone, because LOVE had been put into action for her! I began to smile, because I was reminded that this is one of the many reasons we are doing what we do.

Esther w/ her bedWe finally arrived at Esther’s small one room “house”.   We weren’t able to go inside, but Esther’s mother brought out the thin mattress Esther had been sleeping on.  They were very excited for the new things.  I know Esther must have slept so well!  Thanks to all of you who made this possible.

Yesterday made me realize something.  When at home, the busyness of life and the hurry-up way I live doesn’t leave much room for my heart to really beat.  What do I mean by that?  Well, we all have things to do, people to see and errands to run. Living in the “day to day” routine can be comfortable, but then it doesn’t allow for those opportunities to really experience life.  I want to slow down and “take” the time that has been given to me, instead of wondering where the day went. I don’t want to live from my head only, but I desire to be moved by my heart. If you know me at all, you know that I am pretty compassionate and am quick to shed a tear, so I’m not saying my heart is stone!  What I am saying is that my experience yesterday, helped me to realize again what it means to live.  I found a part of my heart again on that dirt road yesterday.  Thanks Esther for helping me remember why it is so important to live on purpose and for which purpose I am to live.

Thank you for reaching out in LOVE, one child at a time with us.  There are many more “Esthers” that need our help.  Click here to step into a child’s life today.  You won’t regret it…I promise.
