Keeping Busy Demonstrating Love in Uganda

First off, we apologize for not sending more updates!  We have been very busy and by the end of the day, there sometimes doesn’t seem to be enough left in us to write.

We have been having a wonderful time in Uganda!  Our Show Mercy team has been fabulous and they have been working very hard to help with administrative things as well as loving on the children and people of Uganda.

We are heading out to Jinja to visit the Nile River today, but I wanted to write and give you a recap of some of the great things we have been doing:

The men have been working on building book shelves for the “official” Show Mercy library.  Part of our team brought several hundred books for the library.  They covered them all with bookcovers to protect them.  This is going to be a great way to reach out into the community in the near future.  We will keep you posted as we get this up and running.

The team split up and went to visist the people in Gganda Village.  This is the village by Hope Children’s Home.  We handed out lotions, soaps, candy, jewelry and many other things.  We were able to pray and encourage many people! We came across a young boy who was drooling at the mouth and obviously very disabled.  His name was Emmanuel.  We cried as we visited with him as he just sat in the dirt.  My daughter Katelin, who is 9, also cried, because he had a smile on his face, even though his circumstances seemed to be so hard.

We were able to share at 5 different churches in the village.  Each team member stretched themselves and shared.   It is amazing how we can live in totally different worlds, but yet all experience the same feelings and thoughts.

We had an opportunity to be on an Ugandan television show called “Top Teen TV”.  They have over 5 million viewers.  Our teenagers were interviewed and asked very tough questions about life and making the right choices.  They all did great sharing hope and good advice.  Then Pappa Mike and Julee (the “elders”) shared from a parental perspective.  It was great.  We are hoping to post it on Youtube when we return.

We raised all the money for the new mattresses!  THANK YOU!!!  We handed out the new beds along with some bedding Team 1 left.  The kids were absolutely thrilled.  You can see from the pictures that it was definitely time for some new beds!  We are excited to go out on Friday and give the mattresses that are still in good condition to the children at Alpha Omega that do not have one.  Some are sleeping in the dirt, but that will be changing very soon.  We will also be handing out mosquito nets to the sponsored Alpha Omega children too.

Sarah Salley (age 12) has been teaching the children many songs.  It is fun to watch her in action and see all the children respond.  We will post that on Youtube as well.

There are many other things I could post too, but I will stop for now.

Thanks to all of you who just recently sponsored some of the children.  We have had 11 new children sponsored since we have been here.  The look on the children’s faces when they found out they had sponsors was wonderful!

Thanks again for helping us to answer the cry of injustice!  There is laughing where there has been mourning this day.

“If I Had Known That, I Would Have Dropped More Rice”

A couple of days ago, we were having a meeting where different team members were talking about their first day at Hope Children’s Home in Uganda. One of our team told us through tears of something she saw while eating lunch.

As she was eating, she accidently spilled a small amount of rice on the floor. She then noticed a child from outide the building run in and scoop up the rice and eat it. Her heart was broken. We explained to her that it was probably a child who was attending our our school but had not been sponsored yet. When a child is sponsored, they not only are allowed to attend school but they are also provided with a meal during lunch time. For many, this is their only decent meal a day.

She looked at us and said,  “If I had know that, I would have dropped more rice.”

There are still many children that are in need of sponsorship.  They are attending our school but until they are sponsored, unfortunately, we cannot provide a meal for them. We are very aware that for most of us, it is a matter of “out of sight, out of mind.” However, there are children suffering every day that are praying for a sponsor like you to help them receive even the most basic of needs, food.

Would you consider sponsoring one of these children? You can visit the following link to view some children that are in need of your help. For only $35 a month, you can bring change to the life of a human being with so much potential. You might just be the one that God is calling on to provide the hope and purpose to a child in Uganda.
